Fairtrade national initiatives, in conjunction with retailers, regularly organise huge promotions to boost banana sales, particularly in the UK, the Netherlands and Switzerland, where the last measured Fairtrade share of the banana market is over 50%. For the moment, bananas are one of the most dynamic products on the Fairtrade market.

In 2002, 21,400 tonnes of conventional Fairtrade bananas were sold throughout Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, the UK, Luxembourg, Finland and France. In 2003 average sales per week are at a rate of around 530 tonnes per week. Conventional Fairtrade sales are fairly static in most markets apart from the UK, where they are growing steadily. Moreove, Switzerland has a great potential to increase their sales of conventional bananas.

In 2003, approximately 530 tonnes of organic Fairtrade bananas are also being sold each week across Europe, with the Dominican Republic supplying around 50% of the total volume. In 2002, some 14,280 tonnes of organic Fairtrade bananas were sold in Europe, around 40% of which were marketed in Switzerland. The other main markets for organic Fairtrade bananas are the UK, the Netherlands, Finland and Austria. They are also available in France, Belgium and Luxembourg but in smaller quantities.
