Sustainability legislation in the European Union.

Producers and companies selling Fairtrade products into and within the EU have to comply with a growing number of binding sustainability regulations and directives.

Fairtrade works to influence relevant legislative processes in the EU with the aim to make supply chains fairer and secure market access for Fairtrade products. The issues we have championed for the past three decades have reached the core of the political agenda now.

We support producer organisations and guide businesses in working towards compliance with EU legislation while continuing to call for the burden of compliance to be shared fairly.

Which EU initiatives are relevant to Fairtrade?

The European Union regulations and directives listed below affect Fairtrade supply chains.

Many of them were initiated in the context of the European Green Deal which aims at making the European Union climate neutral by 2050, targeting agriculture and other sectors. We’re partnering with other organisations to advocate for a transformation of the EU Green Deal into a Global Green Deal that fully acknowledges the connection between market demands in the EU and production practices outside of it – including environmental policies rooted in the realities of farmers, and a just transition strategy towards compliance that includes long-term finance. Read the call to action for a global green deal.
