Fairtrade statement on EU's final vote to delay EU Deforestation Regulation implementation for 12 months
Fairtrade international is pleased with European Institutions’ agreement to honour the commitment made to the EU Deforestation Regulation in 2023 and confirm the 12-month postponement of the law’s application.
By extending the time in which the law comes into force to 30 December 2025, the EU is providing Fairtrade certified coffee, cocoa, and soy producers with certainty and predictability, as well as the time they need to align with the legislation’s requirements. While some producers and companies have invested heavily in getting ready for the original deadline, we recognise that many producers need more time and support to take the steps necessary to collect and analyse their geolocation data. This will help prevent supply chain disruptions and ensure that small-scale farmer organisations can continue to do business in the EU.
Fairtrade strongly believes the EUDR will help to protect the world’s forests, fight climate change, and promote biodiversity. We are committed to preventing deforestation, have aligned key Fairtrade Standards with the EUDR, and will continue to support Fairtrade farmers by moving forward with hands-on support.
