Fairtrade NAPP embeds human rights and environmental due diligence
Fairtrade NAPP works to support farmers and workers with policy reforms that protect human and environmental rights – in order to mitigate human rights risks in supply chain across Asia and the Pacific Region.
The agriculture sector in the Asia-Pacific region is vital for the livelihoods of millions of people, but it is also fraught with human rights and environmental challenges.
ILO estimates that about 25 million people globally are in forced labour, with a significant portion working in agriculture.
In rural communities across Asia, women are disproportionately affected by poverty, with the absence of gender-responsive policies leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and violence.
Moreover, the expansion of agricultural production for key commodities such as palm oil, soy and coffee further contributes to deforestation and environmental degradation, with unsustainable practices like slash-and-burn techniques and pesticide use leading to soil degradation and water contamination.
The Asia-Pacific region also remains highly vulnerable to climate change, which exacerbates environmental risks in agriculture, with extreme weather events such as floods and droughts disrupting crop yields and supply chains, leaving smallholder farmers struggling to adapt.
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need for Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) to prevent and address violations that impact both farmers, workers and the environment.
However, through comprehensive HREDD frameworks, improved transparency, capacity building, and stakeholder collaboration, these risks can be mitigated. The engagement of international organizations, local governments, and businesses is key to creating a more ethical and sustainable agricultural supply chain in the region.

How Fairtrade NAPP supports Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) across Asia and Pacific Region
Fairtrade NAPP recognizes the importance of Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) in promoting sustainable and ethical practices across its supply chains and works to support its producer organisations in upholding ethical, social, and environmental practices.
By incorporating HREDD, Fairtrade NAPP ensures that producers comply with international human rights and environmental standards, fostering responsible business practices, preventing exploitation, and mitigating environmental risks.
