Fairtrade Premium Impact

The Fairtrade Premium is more than just a financial benefit for small-scale coffee producers—it's a driver of sustainable development, community empowerment, and environmental stewardship.

Between 2020 and 2022, coffee producers in the Asia Pacific region generated over 21.09 million Euros in Fairtrade Premium, with Indonesia leading the way, accounting for 46% of this total. India contributed 14%, followed by Vietnam with 10%, and Papua New Guinea at 9%. These figures represent not only economic growth but also profound social and environmental impacts that are changing the lives of farmers and their communities.

The Fairtrade Premium empowers coffee-growing communities to invest in a range of initiatives, from social support and education to environmental sustainability and economic development. In 2021 -22 alone, over 2.82 million Euros was allocated, with an impressive 82% directed toward fighting hunger through critical social support projects.

Social Support

Fairtrade Premium funds have been channeled into essential social initiatives by coffee producers, including direct premium payments to farmer members and workers, emergency and disaster relief, and community financial services such as loans and rotating funds. In addition, the premium has supported health insurance for members and their families, provided scholarships, and funded training on workers' rights, social compliance, and child labour prevention. Communities have benefited from improved infrastructure, such as clean water and sanitation facilities, school resources, and medical treatment, while vulnerable groups, including the elderly and orphans, have also been supported.

Environmental Stewardship

A significant portion of the Fairtrade Premium is invested in environmental sustainability initiatives. Coffee farmers receive training on good agricultural practices, soil management, and productivity improvements, which are vital for maintaining both the quality of the crops and the health of the environment. The premium also funds reforestation projects, waste management systems, and capacity-building efforts to enhance environmental services.

Economic Empowerment

The Fairtrade Premium is a catalyst for economic growth and organizational development among coffee producers. Investments are made in production and quality improvement, including the construction of storage warehouses, upgrading processing facilities, and providing health and safety equipment for farmers. Additionally, funds are used for certification and audit costs, ensuring that Fairtrade standards are met while promoting long-term business sustainability.
