Fairtrade is good for producers
Producers are at the heart of Fairtrade. Investing in a Fairtrade certification can give your producer organisation greater economic stability and help you to become more sustainable.
Volatile global market prices, power imbalances in supply chains and the consequences of climate change are tough challenges for farmers and workers in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific region.
Often too many trade risks and responsibilities are pushed onto these producers, making it difficult to achieve a price that pays for production and the labour going into it. New rules about respecting human rights within supply chains (HRDD) are coming into effect in several regions of the world.
Without fairer trade agreements, producers are most likely left to pay the price for such important ethical regulations. Meanwhile crops are threatened by rising temperatures, floods and other effects of the changing climate, again increasing the pressure on producers.
Under such challenging circumstances, Fairtrade aims to strengthen producers and help them to build resilience.

Long lasting change
Fairtrade encourages positive change through time. The standards require producer organisations to define medium and long term goals and helps them to follow up on them. Living incomes, living wages, gender equality, opportunities for young people and adaptation to climate change are areas Fairtrade offers support and hosts special programmes for. We support the next generation of farmers to carry forward values of fairness and sustainability, while developing skills in leadership, management, advocacy, and business development that will serve them well as farmers, cooperative managers, and community leaders.
More about our programmes across the world."Without a fair price, logically, it would not be possible to fairly pay workers. (…) Joining ASOGUABO gave us many opportunities to move ahead, including a fair price. In addition, with the Fairtrade Premium we can improve the infrastructure in our plantation and benefit our staff. Thanks to ASOGUABO and Fairtrade we have a family."
Jessica Ramón Sanmartín, banana farmer and member of Asociación de Pequeños Productores Bananeros ‘El Guabo’ (ASOGUABO) in Ecuador
More than a label
We don’t just label products as ethical—we create real sustainable change by more equitably distributing resources to the beginning of the supply chain, leveraging local and regional agricultural expertise and creating standards that protect people and the environment.
